8 July 2002 (Monday): a little monday-morning cynicism
Ahh, humor forwards...
"I Pledge allegiance to the Stock
Of the United Corporations of America
And to the Profit Margin for which it stands
One Fraternity, Under Greed, Invisible,
With Liberty and Justice for sale."
My dad's been staying up late watching Now with Bill Moyers on public television. "It's turning me into a liberal," he remarked the other night, after a program on water rights in Bolivia. I gave a measured nod. Yes, well, I said, trying to hide my smile.
I have decided that I miss dancing. Yesterday afternoon I drove north to check out a little saloon/dance hall I'd heard about, and before I knew it I was out on the floor two-stepping with an old gentleman to a five-piece band playing "The Way You Look Tonight." He was an excellent lead -- despite my having forgotten the two-step entirely, we survived the song with flair. During a break the bandleader, upon hearing I played the piano, invited me to sit in on a song or two. I was shy, though; reading charts is not my forte just yet. Another time.
